  • Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. In the U.S., more people die by suicide each year than die because of HIV or homicide (homicide ranks 16th).
  • An average of 1 person every 13.3 minutes killed themselves.
  • There were an estimated 987,950 suicide attempts in 2011, or one suicide attempt every 32 seconds.
  • Males are four times as likely to die by suicide as females – although females attempt suicide three times as often as males.
  • Ninety percent of suicides that take place in the United States are associated with mental illness, including disorders involving the abuse of alcohol and other drugs.

  • Colorado is currently ranked 9th in the country for suicide. (Based on 2011 data).
  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for young Coloradans ages 10-34 (Based on 2011 data).
  • In recent years Colorado has consistently ranked among the top ten states for suicide death rates.
  • Colorado suicide rates have exceeded the national average by almost 40% since suicide data was first collected in 1910.
